Haircut!

So after a few, "What a pretty girl!" comments, and my mother-in-law wanting to take Owen to get his hair cut while I was at work, I decided it was time for a summer shorty. Here is a before picture of Owen and his long locks at a Pawtucket Red Sox game. Mike took him with a group of other kids. He had a fun time running around, but could care less about the game.

This picture really shows the length in the back. This is from an end of the year party at Mike's principal's house. Owen was the hit of the party making everyone swim with him.

"Some" of the hair I cut off.

OK, so I admit that I can't do everything perfectly, but at least I try! Owen turned just as I was cutting and a nice little chunk came out. Oops! I was able to fix it, kind of.

And the moment you have been waiting for...

Not too bad in the end. But now I find myself cutting a little here and there everyday trying to get it just right. Good thing Owen doesn't mind.
Anyone else want a haircut?!

Cryptic Providence: Tree of Life

Please scroll down to the blog entry Cryptic Providence: Tree of Life. Although I just published this entry, I actually started it on the 14th so it is showing up before the latest blog entries.
Thanks and enjoy!

Celtics Beat LA!!!!

As you know by now, our family is one great big Celtics fan that starts with our fearless leader Mike. I think I have watched just about every Celtics game since I met him in college; through the bad, extremely bad, and now incredible times. And now the Celtics have won it all for the first time in over twenty years! They didn't just win it all, but beat their all-time rival the LA Lakers. You should have heard our house erupt on Tuesday night, and every playoff game night for that matter. Each game Marzy, Deardorf, Willie D, and sometimes Pat came over for the game and they had to come in the same order that they came for the first game or it was bad luck. One time they came out of rotation and they actually all went outside and came back in in the correct rotation. Talk about superstition.
Here they are after the Celtics won.

This is how they were through out the games. Jumping up and down, yelling at the TV, and cheering. I can't believe Owen slept through it all with all the noise downstairs.

GO CELTICS!!!!!!!!!

Strawberry Pickin'

Yesterday afternoon we took a break from painting Owen's big boy room to go strawberry picking with the Greenes. The boys had a lot of fun, did a great job finding the darkest red ones (almost), and ate their way through the field. Actually every time I turned around Owen was eating one!

Amy and I ate a "few" too!

Cryptic Providence: Tree of Life

I made a promise to myself that when we moved here I would try and get involved in more things, especially in the art scene. So, when I saw a call for artist submissions for Cryptic Providence, an art installation in a cemetary, I was intriqued. The first week in March I went to the North Burial Grounds, one of the oldest cemetaries in the US, to go on a tour and get a better understanding of the scope of the project. While there I was inspired to construct a Tree of Life. I had no idea at the time what this project would end up meaning to me. On March 29th, two days before my submission for the project was due, I drove to the burial grounds to meet with the grounds keeper and go over my project. On my way there I called my sister Trish to give her a hard time for not calling me back the week before. She didn't answer so I left a message. I met with the grounds keeper, and then ran errands with Mike. It was then that we received the terrible news that my sister had passed away. I was devistated, but with the encouragement of Mike I decided to hand in my submission anyway. I am now proud to say that I am one of fifteen artists accepted to be a part of Cryptic Providence, out of almost a hundred who applied.

Friday the 13th, was the opening of Cryptic Providence. The opening was a huge success and they estimated around 200 people coming throughout the night. I want to thank everyone who came out to support me. I also want to thank Bruce Willard for his incredible carpentry skills, dedication to the project, and support of his crazy daughter-in-law. Here is my piece and a little more information about the rest of Cryptic Providence...

The Willard men helping with the installation.

The front of my Tree of Life that measures 8' tall and about 5 1/2' wide, with a short write up about it that I "buried" next to it. I was able to pick where in the North Burial Grounds that I wanted my installation, so I chose the field of unmarked graves because I wanted it to represent everyone in the cemetery; those with expensive monuments to those who were unrecognized. I also had the front of the tree facing East because that is said to be judgement day.

The back of the tree.

Some of my supporters on opening night. There was a steady flow of traffic, which was nice. We left pretty early to have dinner with friends and I was told that the majority of the crowds came after that because that was when the performances started.

My incredible carpenter who I wouldn't have been able to complete this project without! Thank you again Bruce so much!

This project is an interpretation of the Tree of Life that is found in various religious texts, as it has been translated and further interpreted to more modern terms. The ten circles of the Tree of Life correlate to the bubbles found within the tree.

Here is what you see within the ten bubbles that can be viewed from both sides: {I hope this helps explain the project a little better because I know it is hard to really see from the pictures.}
Body + Sensations = a collection of small animal bones

Subconscious = a miniature ecosphere to represent mother nature, something that is a part of all of us and should be an important part of our subconscious

Heart = an image of Owen, who represents the innocents of life and questions the meaning of life and death, and the phases of the tree of life

Feelings = an empty bubble for one to interpret

Love = this means family to me, which one gets a strong sense of when looking at the scripture of headstones in the North Burial Grounds. This bubble has handmade crocheted baby booties that Grammy Helen made. Thanks Gram!

Spiritual will: Purpose = statue of Buddha encased by red ribbon. Even if you are not a Buddhist, Buddha represents the peace in all of us and the red ribbon has different religious connotations including guarding off evil spirits.

Thoughts = My thoughts when creating this project were of Trish, so this bubble has an image of her encased in a smaller bubble that hangs on the front side of the tree and red rose petals from her funeral on the other side.

Will = a statue of a winged cherub that is so often seen in the North Burial Grounds and represents the will of many who are buried there

Spiritual love: Awareness = a rosary to represent the majority of those buried there and to signify my own spiritual awareness

Self = this questions the notion of what one wants in the end; for me it is to be cremated so the bubble is filled with the cremations of the late Thornton Willard generously donated by Grammy Helen.

Below is a poster for the project that is hanging up around town. There were a couple of press releases that went out and then the curator of the project, Jay Critchley, was interviewed on NPR and two local TV stations.

There are many interesting installations through out the burial grounds as well as performance pieces taking place during the summer. Below are some websites you can check out of other projects:

The Bells Ring for Thee

This is an installation in the Potter's Field made up of small bells made out of recycled cans. It is called the Bells Ring for Thee. It makes a very nice, although subtle, chime.

I'm not sure what the installation below is called, but I really like it. It is basically some chicken wire that has pieces of fabric and removable sharpies hanging on it. You are then encouraged to write a message to a loved one or a prayer of some sort. There is also a bench that they built for reflection.

Overall I think Cryptic Providence is a success and I believe it will encourage people to visit this historic landmark. I am excited to be a part of it and hope that you will take the time to see it for yourself if you are in the area.
Thanks to all those who contributed in one way or another, and to everyone for your support.

Our First Swedish Visitors!

Gabbe and Viktoria came to visit us and stay for a night on their way to Cape Cod. It was so good to see Gabbe again, catch up on old times and friends, and to finally meet Viktoria. We had a nice dinner and then they got to experience true American sports fans as some of the guys came over to watch the Celtics game, which they won I must add. It was a short visit, but we had a very nice time, and Owen even said a few Swedish words for them.
{It was very sunny when we were taking pictures as you can see.}

The Beginning of Summer at Willard Pond

I finally found my camera, so I thought I would show you what the beginning of summer looks like at Willard Pond. The other morning we woke up to a deer standing at the edge of this path. It was beautiful!

Here is some video that I was finally able to download now that I found the camera. This is probably a month old now. Owen loves to say things that he learns from Diego, so here he is saying delicious in Spanish.
